The Hugh Lane Gallery

The Hugh Lane Gallery

Hugh Lane, who died in 1915 created Dublin’s first Municipal Gallery, and when he died he donated a large chunk of his considerable art collection to the gallery. He died aboard the Lusitania, a cruise liner that was sunk by German forces, an action that hastened the USA’s entry into World War 1.

The Gallery is located on Parnell Square, in Charlemont House, a beautiful piece of Georgian architecture, that is just opposite the Garden of Remembrance.

The gallery has a huge collection of priceless paintings. This collection was added to on the 23rd May 2014, when paintings by Renoir, Pissarro, and Manet were returned, from the National Gallery of London. After Hugh Lane’s death his collection had been divided between the two galleries, but now most of them have been returned to the gallery, in Dublin, that bears his name.
