No holiday in Dublin would be complete without a trip on the DART – an electric rail system – taking you along the beautiful coastline which stretches out of Dublin city centre, along the coast to Howth in the North, and Greystones in the South. You can catch the DART from Connolly Station, which is just a five minute walk from O’Connell Street. After you get out of the city, every stop along the way is a beautiful coastal town or village. One of the great joys of the DART is that you can get out at any stop – after you leave the metropolis of Dublin – and walk to the stop further on. Each of these coastal walks is very manageable, and very beautiful. Then when you have finished your walk you can hop back on the DART and head further out or back to Dublin for your evening meal. These walks are particularly enjoyable for people like me, who enjoy walking to places, but not back from them.
For those with real walking stamina we can heartily recommend the walk along the coast from Bray to Greystones. The DART serves both towns.
Or you could travel North to Howth, which is a beautiful seaside peninsula, resplendent with stunning views, quaint shops and one of the best fish and chip shops in Ireland. Given the stunning towns and coastal scenery that it serves, the DART is extremely cheap and would be worth the fare just for the views that you can enjoy whilst on the train.
A worthwhile stopping point in the South is Dún Laoghaire. This is a lovely little coastal town and perfect for those that like to escape the hustle and bustle during their holidays. The sea air, combined with the nice shops and quaint houses, make this a wonderful addition to your Dublin holiday itinerary.
